To promote the physical activity level of individuals with severe mental illness (SMI), in addition to exercise, sport is another possible form. In comparison with exercise, sport usually involves specific rules, skills and more interpersonal interactions and competitive experiences. More literature supports the health benefits of exercise for individuals with SMI, but the research on the effect of sports is relatively limited. In addition, recovery is an important concept in current psychiatric care and rehabilitation. The process and results of doing sport have several conceptual echoes with recovery. This article reviewed the literature on the health benefits of sport in people with SMI, with a focus on soccer. At the same time, it discussed the correlation between soccer for SMI and recovery, providing clinical practice experience, and finally listed the suggestions for practice and research.
